Lavenham Stories - Fit for Purpose
Repair Service:
Restoring a Gilet
at the Lavenham
Factory
November 2021
We're proud to say the each and every Lavenham piece is still made here on site in Suffolk, just as it has been since 1969. We use high quality materials and craft clothes carefully to ensure they last for years to come. Our founder Mrs Elliot set about to make a 'fit for purpose' horse rug and we have never strayed far from this founding ethos.
Strong believers in clothes that can be well-used, treasured and passed on, the reuse and repair ethos reduces the amount of textiles ending up in landfill. It also eases the demand for new clothes, the creation of which places a heavy strain on our world’s finite resources.
Even the toughest clothes will start to deteriorate after continuous wear, which is why we offer a lifetime repair service on all Lavenham garments. If your Lavenham starts to show signs of wear, you can send it back to us for repair.

We captured the repair service from start to finish when a well-loved Mickfield gilet was sent to us for repair. As is usually the case when a gilet needs fixing, the cotton corduroy binding had started to wear down in places and fade in colour. Roma who works on repairs started by removing the cord binding and press studs. New cord was then sewn in place and the press studs re-attached. Highly skilled and experienced it doesn't take Roma long to get the gilet back to its former glory, ready for further years of daily use.
